Stephen Donnelly has called on the newly elected members of Wicklow County Council to lend their support to the development of a new, purpose-built Sports Campus in North Wicklow.

The Fianna Fáil Health Spokesperson has written to Councillors to congratulate them on their election and urged them to join him in backing the creation of the planned 49-acre facility in Fassaroe.

Deputy Donnelly commented, “Wicklow has a proud sporting heritage, and in recent years we have produced several world-class athletes across a huge variety of sports, including undisputed World Champion Katie Taylor, and Middlesbrough and Ireland keeper Darren Randolph. However, while we certainly don’t want for sporting idols, all too often our clubs lack the facilities needed to develop the next generation of superstars.

sport in Wicklow will never reach potential if we cannot provide clubs with the necessary facilities

“Despite the best efforts of the dedicated and selfless individuals that keep these clubs running, sport in Wicklow will never reach potential if we cannot provide clubs with the necessary facilities.

“Take Enniskerry FC for example. It is one of Wicklow’s biggest and fastest growing clubs with plans in place for a vibrant and exciting future already mapped out. However, these proposals are currently limited by the club’s inability to find appropriate facilities. There are endless examples of clubs in Wicklow struggling with the same situation.

“In light of this, the development of a Sports Campus in North Wicklow that is tailor-made to the needs of the clubs in the area is a once in a lifetime opportunity. It wold allow us to create a bright sporting future for Wicklow, ensuring that every child hoping to follow in Katie Taylor’s storied footsteps has the chance to follow their dreams.

“Wicklow County Council has signed a contract with a specialist sports consulting firm for the project. Repucon will help planners understand the sporting needs of the area. I have already written to all the clubs and associations in North Wicklow encouraging them to have their say and will facilitate consultation between the clubs and the consultants. Now, I am calling on the newly elected County Councillors to join me in supporting this plan and work together to ensure it moves forward”, concluded Deputy Donnelly.
