In an attempt to have the now closed Post Office in Ballywaltrim reopened An Post have written to other Postmasters asking them if they would be interested in submitting an interest in operating the post office.
The closure of the Post Office has hit the community hard, many people have been negatively affected, particularly the elderly
Deputy John Brady, TD Sinn Fein said “Recently An Post has advertised the position of postmaster for the now closed Ballywaltrim Post Office for the third time. This came about after discussions with two previous interested parties broke down. I have been constantly putting pressure on An Post to have the Post Office reopened as quickly as possible.”
“I have now been informed that in an attempt to speed up the reopening of the Post Office that a number of other Postmasters who have contracts with An Post to operate post offices have been written too. They were asked if they would be interested in taking on the lease of the Ballywaltrim Post Office.”
Deputy Brady continued “The closing date for expressing an interest in taking on the Post Office has now passed and it’s my understanding that at least one serious expression of interest has been received. It’s hoped that by giving the contract to someone that already operates a post office may result in the Ballywaltrim reopening quicker. An Post have now started discussions with the interested person with a view of awarding the lease.”
Brady concluded “The closure of the Ballywaltrim Post Office has hit the community hard, many people have been negatively affected, particularly the elderly. Getting it reopened is a priority of mine and I will keep the pressure on An Post to bring this disgraceful and cumbersome process to an end and appoint a new Post Master, so the Ballywaltrim Post Office can reopen.”
