A COUNCILLOR has accused the Government of making Waterford “jump through hoops” for funds while neglecting developments needed to make the city and county grow.
Eamon Quinlan (FF) was outraged that €241 million was being spent on upgrading roads between Westport and Castlebar in the constituency of Regional Development Minister, Michael Ring.
“putting lipstick on a pig”
He described this as a scandal, saying the money had “dropped into the lap” of Mayo while “Waterford has been jumping through every hoop demanded of us by this Government in relation to funding for the North Quays and we still won’t receive Government commitments of around €110 million we asked for.”
Cllr Quinlan claimed Waterford had funding for seven separate projects rejected by the Government. These included €200,000 for completion works to the Railway Station Building in Tramore
He acknowledged that Mr Ring’s department had recently provided €3.7 million funding for Mount Congreve gardens but said this was like “putting lipstick on a pig.”
