FIFTY people took to the streets, braving the cold to take part in the Big Déise Sleep Out. They raised funds to support the work of Focus Ireland, helping the homeless here in Waterford.
Focus Ireland has provided homeless services in Waterford for the last 19 years and the city is now the charity’s largest centre outside Dublin.
More than 300 people access its Waterford services every month. In the last year Focus Ireland has helped 491 households in Waterford who were homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
families live under terrible stress and children suffer the most
A Focus spokesperson said the Big Deise Sleep Out was an opportunity for the Waterford community to show its solidarity with families and children who face homelessness this Christmas.
“Sadly, many parents in Waterford and around Ireland will have to explain that although they no longer live in their home Santa Claus will still know how to find them this Christmas,” he said.
“These families live under terrible stress and children suffer the most.”
