A TEENAGER from Waterford was among 23 young people who have graduated as trainee jockeys.
Kieran McGrath (16) from Clashmore, graduated from the SOLAS / KWETB Trainee Jockey programme at the Racing Academy and is now proceeding to take up employment in the industry.
He completed his work placement with Johnny Murtagh and will aim to follow in the footsteps of other successful graduates such as Seamie Heffernan and this year’s Irish Derby winning jockey, Padraig Beggy. Kieran is now working for Joseph O’Brien.
Twelve girls were among the group who successfully completed the ten-month residential programme and were presented with their certificates and prizes by John Oxx and Michael Halford at a ceremony on the Kildare campus. Cheques were presented by trainees to three charities – animal rescue charity My Lovely Horse, the Irish Injured Jockeys fund and Pieta House – arising from fund-raising efforts over the year.
