MORE than 9,800 dogs ended up in pounds across Ireland last year, 329 of them in Waterford.

Of the Waterford dogs, 201 were reclaimed or rehomed and a further 124 were transferred to an animal welfare provider.

The problem is at its worst in the weeks after Christmas when people sometimes find that owning a dog is more difficult than they had expected.

To help integrate a new dog into the family, pet retailer Petmania hosts free monthly Puppy Care Classes with everything you need to know to care for, feed and protect the wellbeing of your new dog.

Craig Power from Petmania Waterford said, “For anyone who was lucky enough to get the gift of a new puppy this Christmas we highly recommend Petmania’s free Puppy Care Classes.”

The next Puppy Care Class is Saturday, January 11. Places are limited and booking is encouraged. Register in your local Petmania store or online at petmania.ie
