WATERFORD is Ireland’s top foodie destination – and now it’s official. The county has been announced as the winner of Foodie Destinations 2019, a competition run by the Restaurants Association of Ireland.

We were selected by votes from the public combined with a score from a judging visit.  Taste Causeway (Co Antrim) came second and The Food Coast Donegal came third. The winners of the contest, sponsored by FBD Insurance, was announced at a ceremony in Mount Juliet, Kilkenny.

Speaking about the entry from Waterford, the judges said that they were blown away by how much effort the community had put in to making Waterford a real foodie experience.
They said there was a great sense of community evident on their visit, with big and small companies getting involved.

CEO of the Restaurants Association of Ireland, Adrian Cummins, offered “massive congratulations” to Waterford. “It’s clear that a huge amount of time and effort has gone into making it a foodie destination worth visiting and it is clear that it is a very co-ordinated effort run by people who are passionate about food in Waterford,” he said.

Two Waterford businesses, meanwhile, have been shortlisted for the prestigious Georgina Campbell Irish Food and Hospitality Awards . They are Glasha Farmhouse, Ballymacarbry, and the Grow HQ café in Waterford city.

Establishments are anonymously assessed by a team of impartial food experts, food writers and retired hospitality professionals. The winners will be announed in Dublin on September 15.

Also, Blas na hÉireann, the Irish food awards, has named 16 finalists from Waterford who will go to the last round of judging in Dingle next month. They are:

  • Dessert First,
  • Glorious Sushi,
  • Granville Hotel,
  • Irish Gourmet Butter,
  • Legacy Irish Cider,
  • Pip & Pear,
  • Pure Food Company,
  • Kiely’s Dunhill,
  • Tea & Coffee Warehouse,
  • The Hartrey Kitchen,
  • Veronica’s Cafè and
  • Woodstown Bay Shellfish.

Blas na hÉireann is going on the road with a special roadshow to help finalists get ready for Dingle on September 4 at 10am in the Bank Of Ireland Workbench, The Quay.
