THE Vikings will be back in Waterford on Sunday (August 25). But there is no need to hide your gold or lock up your daughters.
Déise Medieval Vikings will be bringing a a free day of family fun to the Greenway at Carriganore. The event, part of Heritage Week,will run from 10.30am to 5pm.
The living history and craft village will feature traditional Viking activities and there will be a weapon display – with the chance to try on a helmet and hold a sword or axe.
Archaeologists from TVAS Ireland will be run Dig in a Box, opportunity for kids to learn about the work that archaeologists do, what they find and the tools and techniques they use.
Maeve Sikora, the Keeper of Irish Antiquities, will be attending with the National Museum’s replica Viking artefact collection.
Maeve is an expert on Viking women’s burials in Ireland, and during the day she will give two talks about Viking female burials at the Viking ‘showgrave.’
LONGSHIP: On Saturday, August 31, from 12 noon, Mount Congreve gardens will host a celebration of Waterford’s maritime heritage. A replica Viking longship will be on display.
