THE County Council is to meet with Waterways Ireland to discuss plans for the River Barrow in Carlow.
The Barrow Blueway has a planned upgrade to provide a “multi-use shared leisure route” connecting Lowtown in Kildare to St Mullins in Carlow, a distance of 115 km of off-road, flat, accessible, public space across Kildare, Laois and Carlow.
Carlow County Council refused planning permission for the project in February 2018 but the decision was appealed.
In April an order was made by An Bórd Pleanala which refused permission for the route.
Cllr Tom O’Neill asked the local authority at this month’s full meeting of the council about plans for the “future development of the Barrow” and if officials had been in contact with Waterways Ireland yet.
In response, Chief Executive of the Council, Kathleen Holohan, said: “We are getting them to come in to discuss plans on the Barrow since the planning decision.”
