CARLOW competitors impressed at the WUKF World Karate Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia.

The competition at the Zimny Stadium Ondreja Nepelu saw the biggest number of competitors so far with over 2000 from 36 countries taking part.

Sarah Baldwin and Mary Boylan, along with Peter Baldwin (coach), from Ballinabranna Karate Club, travelled with the Irish squad (a team of 20) under Pat Rockett (IKF).

Mary won a silver medal, the first medal for the Irish squad on day one in the Veterans Kumite event.

Sarah won a bronze in the Team Kumite event which she fought with team mates Clodagh and Brianna. In her individual Kata event she narrowly missed out on a medal by just .1 (one-tenth of a point).

The Irish contingent brought home a total of six individual golds and one team gold, two silvers, four individual bronze medals and four team bronze, finishing thirteenth on the medals table out of 83 federations.
